Meet Gary Marks - Business Intelligence Manager, MRN

1.) How long have you worked at MRN?

January 2020 – 14 months which has gone really quickly!

2.) A typical day in the life of a Business Intelligence Manager at MRN would look like… ?

Emails first, just to double check the house hasn’t burnt down overnight, so to speak! I then have a daily meeting with my team to get yesterday’s updates and check on progress made. I then enter into a mixture of data governance, strategy and design meetings which occupy most of my day. Aside from meetings and updates, there is a lot of paperwork to do!

3.) In your opinion, what makes a great Business Intelligence Analyst/Engineer at MRN?

It’s Someone who is not only a team player but can also take on a challenge independently. They need to have an interest in data and technology etc to really enjoy working in that space. Being a geek helps!

4.) What made you want to join MRN?

When I saw the job post, I did some research and read though lots of reviews. It looked like a great opportunity and a great company to work for. I also felt that I had a lot to offer the MRN. I thought this was a great opportunity to draw on my previous experience and use it to deliver a business intelligence function for a rapidly growing business. It’s also a lot closer to home!!

5.) What’s the best thing about your role?

It’s a fairly green field site, meaning there’s a lot of opportunity for improvement and a lot of opportunity for advancement in the areas of technology. My role offers the creative freedom to really help drive some of those initiatives forward in the BI space. One of the things that I really like about my role is the ability to offer opportunities for advancement and growth to others – something that I am really passionate about.

6.) What 3 words best describe MRN for you?

Young – Ambitious – Driven

7.) What does MRN offer you?

It offers a friendly, collaborative working environment where I feel respected and challenged. I get a great sense of reward when I see when projects and new enhancements deliver value. There’s plenty of opportunity to grow and make your own mark if you have the drive and interest to do so. MRN is also very flexible and gives me the ability to balance my work and home life.

8.) Do you have advice for anybody who wants to work in your field?

Think twice!! Only joking. You have got to make sure that you are interested in BI first and to do that you need to understand what it entails. Google is your friend here. IT support is always a good place to start and can lead down many career paths in this space.

9.) What motivates you to work hard?

For me personally, it is my family. Being a father of two little ones can really focus your attention when thinking about the future! I also have a strong personal interest in this role. I enjoy working with technology and enjoy working with other people.

10.) What is your favorite thing about your career?

I had the chance to play with new tech! In this role, I don’t get to do that much anymore but I will always be happy to write a line of code or two when the need arises! Above all, I like to think that what I contribute goes towards helping other people.
